These South African celebrities are taking the entertainment industry by storm – just like their parents.
Being born to a famous parent is not easy. It comes with a life in the spotlight and pressure to become great, and sometimes even greater, than the parent.
Let’s look at South African celebrity children who are doing a great job following in their parents’ footsteps.
One cannot mention famous South African families and not think of the Mhlongo’s.
From Somizi’s parents, Mary Twala and the late Ndaba Mhlongo, who were great entertainers, to Somizi and Palesa Mocuminyane’s daughter Bahumi, truly talent runs in the Mhlongo family.
Bahumi stars on SABC 2 telenovela ‘Keeping Score’.
“I’m blessed to have parents who really care about my future. My mom and dad are my inspiration and considering that they have been in the industry for so long alongside my grandparents … I will also excel in my own right. I am not going to live under their shadow, but instead, I am going to make sure that I also build a name for myself,” she told Move.
Johnny Clegg’s son, Jesse, has made a mark in the music industry – just like his father.
The multi-platinum-selling artist has released three albums and is making a name for himself internationally.
Jesse who has toured the United States and Canada has even been nominated three times for the South African Music Awards (SAMA).
Nonhle Thema’s mom Cynthia Shange was the first black beauty queen to represent South Africa at the Miss World pageant in the 1970’s. She has also been acting for more than a decade, inspiring her daughter to do the same.
“My mom is the reason I got into acting. I always prayed and asked God to help me continue her legacy,” Nonhle told Sunday World.
Ringo Madlingozi’s son Phila is an amazing singer like his legendary father.
Not only does he sing, but Phila is also an actor and filmmaker. He was introduced to South African television as an actor when he landed a role on popular drama series ‘Intersexions’. He also has a role on Mzansi Magic’s Xhosa drama series ‘Isikizi’.’
In an interview with IOL in 2013, Phila said he will be greater than his father Ringo. “You can build anything on a solid foundation, and I have the best foundation ever – especially when it comes to music. Despite the good genes, I have my father and my cousin MXO who have done amazing things in music.”
